The 27 head-to-head contests that took place this past weekend inside the national rankings helped to build the inaugural High School Football America 300 of the season, sponsored by NFL Play Football. The dominant schools in Southern California, Mater Dei and St. John Bosco, are still Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. But Georgia’s Buford, which defeated preseason No. 3 St. Frances Academy (Maryland) 18-0 on Friday night, made a significant jump inside the Top 10. In the most recent rankings produced by the secret methodology used by HSFA, Buford climbs three positions to No. 4.

St. John Bosco, the reigning national champion, travels to Florida to take on No. 6 St. Thomas Aquinas on ESPN2. Since losing to STA in 2017, the Braves have defeated out-of-state opponents 16 times in a row. This year, the Raiders are vying for their seventh consecutive Florida 7A state title. This week, Bishop Gorman climbs one spot to No. 3. The Gaels beat Utah’s Corner Canyon, ranked 70th, in their opening game. It was the first of five straight games Gorman would play against teams with national rankings. BG will face No. 74 Long Beach Poly (California) this week.

With a 35-10 victory over Lipscomb Academy, the two-time defending Division II-AA champion from Tennessee and the preseason No. 23 team, No. 5 IMG Academy (Florida) earned a noteworthy victory. The Ascenders’ opponent this week will be Pennsylvania’s No. 10 St. Joseph’s Prep, the reigning 6A state champion. This week, teams from Georgia other than Buford are also climbing the rankings. After a convincing victory against Dutch Fork, the reigning 5A champion from South Carolina and the preseason No. 11 team, Colquitt County has moved up five spots to No. 13.

Langston Hughes, the defending Georgia 6A champion, jumps from No. 25 to No. 17 this week. The 2022 7A runner-up Carrollton was defeated by Hughes 39-35 on Friday night in a game that was broadcast on ESPN. Hughes had to come from behind. This week, six new clubs are included in the first national ranking of the regular season:

  • No. 128 Ben Davis (Indiana)
  • No. 137 Pickerington North (Ohio)
  • No. 179 Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Georgia)
  • No. 200 Byrnes (South Carolina)
  • No. 215 Helix (California)
  • No. 247 Pearl-Cohn (Tennessee)
